Welcome to Dubai
It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to delegates to the 10th International Secondary Lead Conference, convened in one of the most modern and dynamic cities in the world, Dubai. This tenth edition marks a significant milestone for the event, bringing together an often unsung industry that produces over 70% of the world’s lead metal supply. It is the only global event that focuses on one of the most critical non-ferrous industries and one of the few manufactured products that truly fall into the category of a circular economy.
Upon reflection on the journey we have undertaken since the inception of the first Conference in Macau 18 years ago, we have diligently explored the complexities of secondary lead smelting and refining, unearthing hidden complexities that have shaped our understanding of this dynamic industry. Many myths have been shattered and corrected over this time, and I’m sure the tenth Conference will be no different.
Today, it is evident that the role of secondary lead in the lead metal market has undergone a transformative process, aptly termed the “maturation” of secondary lead. No longer regarded as the lesser sibling to the primary market, secondary lead has emerged as a dominant force in pricing and market determination, with quality on par with that of primary producers. With our major feed source, the lead-acid battery, now priced similarly to the concentrates of the primary smelter’s secondary, our industry can further solidify its position. However, with progress comes responsibility, and we must prioritise Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and Environmental considerations to attain global operational standards.
Under the able guidance of the Program Committee, we have focused on developing a comprehensive agenda that addresses various facets of our industry, incorporating vital workshops to enrich the knowledge of all professionals in the secondary lead sector. Global experts will illuminate us on metallurgical advancements, the latest engineering developments, and updates on the Lead360 initiative, among other topics, underscoring our commitment to sustainability.
To celebrate this milestone further, a separate two-day training course focusing on the world of secondary lead – “Learning Lead”, will be held after the 10ISLC. It has become evident from hosting the Conference and from being in touch with the many operators and members of the industry that there is a need for a course that covers all aspects of the secondary lead world. From gaining knowledge of sales, marketing and transport activities, understanding the Basel Convention, to the critical occupational, health and safety aspects of handling and treating the metal, this course will be designed for all delegates. It will be a separate two-day course run after the 10ISLC.
These two events offer a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the world of secondary lead, its drivers and its importance to the non-ferrous world. I am confident that the exchange of ideas and knowledge will leave each delegate with a better appreciation for our industry’s dynamism and continuous evolution.
Warm regards,
Mark Stevenson
